When our lovely girl Gretta arrived at our public shelter in Curtea de Arges, we were very much hoping we'd be able to find her a home.
Sadly, Gretta was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer, and instead of finding her a family, we were only able to offer her palliative care.
Our wonderful shelter managers, Tony and Mari, took her to the orchard behind their home, where she was able to spend her final days in comfort, surrounded by greenery and away from the noisy and stressful kennel environment.
We are hoping to be able to offer this same opportunity to our ailing dogs who need the healing power of nature rather than the confines of a metal kennel... and for our particularly old dogs who need the retirement of an orchard when they just aren’t being chosen for a final home here in the UK.
In Gretta's memory, we're raising funds to secure the orchard so that we can do this for our dogs in need. The orchard will only hold 4 or 5 dogs at any one time, but it will make a huge difference for their quality of life and allow our terminal dogs to pass with dignity.
If you would like to contribute to Gretta's orchard, you can do so here. We'll also be offering an opportunity to place memorial plaques for dogs that have crossed the rainbow bridge in the orchard in return for a donation toward the costs - stay tuned for more information or email victoria.p@pawprints2freedom.co.uk to register your interest.
